blocking comment spam

I’m getting bored of moderating comment spam so I’m trying the simple hack described in detail here. It’s no extra work for the commenter. Hidden values ensure that is where the comment came from the form rather than a direct link, used by many bots.

I’l let you know how successful it is. Hopefully I’ll be able to turn moderating off later.

flickr

I noticed flickr a while ago and set up an account. Just another online photo gallery, I thought. Now it’s starting to grow on me.

I like the tags system and organizr especially. I’ve only just started looking into the social networking side to it and it’s all done in the clean, intuitive and informal style that you’d expect to find from a site like Google.

I strongly recommmend it. My username is sixball. Feel free to add me as a contact.

damn comment spam

Yes, I’m getting an endless stream of adverts for viagra, casinos and debt consolidation in the comments and they are morphing as fast as I can define filters.

Therefore, until I can get around to implementing one of those clever ‘type in the trippy code above’ checks I’m moderating all comments. This means that if I’m not near my e-mail when you post then you may have to wait a little before it gets approved.

Warped America

If you saw a colour-coded map of the USA, post-election, you’d think that the reds (republican) well dominated the democrats (blue). This is down to the number of sparsely-populated rural areas which tend to support the republican party.

However, the number of votes a state has is based on its population. It’s possible to deform the map of the USA so that the relative size of states is given by their populations rather than their geographic area.
cartogram of usa
The result is a cartogram and is given here. It’s rather funky.
